When is the best time for a moon phase reading?

This quiz tests how the phases of the Moon are used in tarot and what Tayna's moon spreads say about them. A lunar cycle from one new moon to the next lasts about twenty-nine and a half days, and roughly two weeks pass between the new and the full moon. Many people treat those two points as handy milestones: at the start of the cycle they choose what to begin, and at its peak they take stock and let go of what is not needed.

The site has two three-card spreads for this. The new moon spread asks What to plant, What will support it and The first step. The full moon spread asks What has come to light, What to release and What to be grateful for. You do not need any astrology for them: the date of a phase is in any calendar, and the spread still works a day or two later.

Which cards fit the moon spreads especially well?

Aces and Pages sound right in What to plant, because they speak of seedlings rather than harvest. In What will support it, Pentacles show practical footing and Cups the support of loved ones and your own joy in the work. At the full moon, the Sun and the Star in What has come to light are happy discoveries, while Swords are a sober realization you have had to accept.

A reversed card in What to release suggests the letting go is already underway and only needs you to stop holding on. In What to be grateful for, Cups point to the people around you, Pentacles to everyday and physical things that keep you steady, and the Major Arcana to your own strength. Tradition says the waxing moon suits beginnings and the waning moon endings, but that is custom, not a rule.

How the quiz works

Each round draws five of twelve questions. Tayna keys go to a flawless round, with unlimited replays. A moon spread is not an astrological forecast: the cards do not say the Moon will make your month lucky. The phase is simply a reason to pause and look at your path.

All questions and answers

Open after you play: the full question set with right answers and explanations.
  1. 1. How many cards are in Tayna's new moon spread?

    Right answer: Three

Three places: What to plant, What will support it and The first step. Intention, support, action.

  2. 2. Which position opens the full moon spread?

Right answer: What has come to light

The full moon starts with what is now plain to see, then what to release, then what to be grateful for.

  3. 3. A full moon spread only works on the night of the full moon itself.

    Right answer: Myth

The phase is a handy milestone, not a deadline. The spread still works a day or two afterwards.

  4. 4. Which card fits What to plant in the new moon spread especially well?

    Right answer: Page of Cups

Pages and Aces speak of seedlings, not harvest. The Ten, the World and the Nine are endings, not starts.

  5. 5. Roughly how long is a lunar cycle from new moon to new moon?

    Right answer: About 29.5 days

A lunar month is about 29.5 days. The full moon falls in the middle, roughly two weeks after the new moon.

  6. 6. A reversed card lands in What to release at the full moon. How do you read it?

Right answer: Letting go has begun

A reversed card here says the letting go is already underway; you only need to stop holding on.

  7. 7. What is a new moon spread most often used for?

Right answer: To set an intention

The new moon is a blank page: choose one intention for the month ahead and see where to begin.

  8. 8. Which card in What has come to light at the full moon is a happy discovery?

    Right answer: The Star

The Sun and the Star in this place are happy discoveries: what was blurry is now clear to see.

  9. 9. You need to know astrology to use the moon spreads.

    Right answer: Myth

Not at all: any calendar gives the date of the phase, and the spread is read with the usual card meanings.

  10. 10. How long after a new moon does the full moon usually come?

    Right answer: About two weeks

Half a lunar cycle is about two weeks, so the full moon is a good time to check your new moon intention.

  11. 11. What is the waning moon traditionally chosen for?

Right answer: Letting go and ending

Tradition says the waning moon suits endings and the waxing moon beginnings. It is a custom, not a rule.

  12. 12. Cups appear in What to be grateful for. What do they point to?

Right answer: The people around you

Cups here are the people who held you up all cycle long. Pentacles point to everyday support.
