Career tarot reading
Three cards about your work or studies: where you stand, what slows you down and the next step to take.

A career tarot reading is for the moments when something at work has stalled. Tasks keep circling, the promotion keeps slipping, your studies stopped feeling meaningful, or you simply cannot tell whether you are heading the right way. Three cards help you see your work situation as a whole, away from the noise of meetings and other people's expectations.
The first card shows where you are now: your place, your mood, how you feel about the work. The second names the obstacle — external or internal. The third gives advice: the step that helps things move. It works for a salaried job, freelance work or studies alike — the cards read whatever takes up most of your day.
The cards do not give financial or legal advice, predict your salary or decide whether you should quit. They help you see what is under the surface so your next step is calm and your own. This page is also the home of the Career & study section: below are spreads for changing jobs, job hunting, interviews, exams and finding your calling.
What each position means
- 1
Now
Where you truly stand at work or in your studies today. Pentacles speak of tasks and resources, Wands of energy and ambition, Cups of whether the work still brings joy, Swords of tension and conflict.
- 2
The obstacle
What keeps you from moving: circumstances, people or your own beliefs. A reversed card here often points to an inner brake — fatigue, doubt, or the habit of carrying everything alone.
- 3
Advice
A concrete next step. Court cards in this position suggest a role to take on: the Page to learn, the Knight to act, the Queen to look after yourself and the work, the King to take charge.

- AdvicePage of Pentacles
The Four of Cups in the Now position describes apathy rather than failure: the work no longer moves you, and new offers slip past your attention. The Seven of Swords reversed as the obstacle points to things left unsaid — you do more than anyone sees, but you keep quiet and hope someone will notice. The Page of Pentacles as advice suggests stepping back into the learner's role: pick up one new skill and show the result openly. The cards do not promise a promotion, but they show where to begin.
Good questions for a career reading
Ask about your role and your step rather than other people's decisions. The cards see most clearly what you can influence.
- What do I need to understand about my current job?
- What is holding me back at this company?
- How can I build trust with my new team?
- Where should I put my energy this semester?
- How can I get my interest in my work back?
Work, money and the cards: where the line is
Tarot is good at showing mood, motivation, hidden tension and the things you have not admitted to yourself. It cannot see the terms of a contract, the job market or the numbers. Questions about pay disputes, dismissal, loans or investments belong with a lawyer, an accountant or a financial adviser — use the reading to understand how you feel about them.
If your question is narrow, pick a more precise spread. Should I Change Jobs compares two paths, Will I Find a Job helps during a search, Job Interview prepares you for the meeting, and Your Calling looks at where you are truly drawn.
What the suits tell you in a career reading
If one suit dominates the three cards, it names the main theme of your work situation. Plenty of Pentacles: the question is about resources, skills and stability. Plenty of Swords: tension, arguments and thoughts that will not let you rest. Wands speak of ambition and the wish to grow, Cups of how well the work matches what matters to you.
Major Arcana cards in a career reading show that this is not about day-to-day tasks but about a turn: a new role, a new direction, or a change in how you relate to the work itself.

Frequently asked questions
Will a career reading tell me if I get promoted?
It shows what helps and what hinders your growth, and which step is yours to take. Other people make the promotion decision, so the cards cannot promise it — but they can suggest how to make your work more visible.
Does this spread work for school or university?
Yes. The positions read the same way: where your studies stand, what gets in the way and what to do next. For exams and admissions there are separate spreads in this section.
Can I do a career reading while unemployed?
You can: Now then describes your state during the search and The obstacle what slows it down. The Will I Find a Job spread is a closer fit for that situation, though.
What does The Tower mean in a career reading?
A sudden shake-up: a restructure, the end of a project, old plans falling apart. It is not always bad — The Tower often clears away what had been in the way for a long time. The advice card shows how to meet the change.
Can I ask about my boss or a coworker?
You can ask about your working relationship and your own step within it. The Colleagues and Boss spread in this section shows both sides and how to find common ground.
How often should I do a career reading?
Every few weeks, or whenever something real changes — a new project, a new role, the end of a term. A daily reading about the same job turns into a check on your anxiety rather than advice.
