Past, present, future — a three-card tarot spread

Three cards that tell the whole story: what led here, what is happening now, and where it is going.

The cards are shuffling…

Tap to skip straight to choosing

  1. Past
  2. Present
  3. Future

The three-card tarot spread is probably the most widely used layout there is, and for good reason. Past, present and future turn scattered worries into a story with a beginning, a middle and a next chapter. It is a good pick when something has been going on for a while and you want to see it whole.

The first card shows the roots — the events, choices and feelings it grew from. The second shows where you stand today. The third shows where things are heading if nothing changes. It works for any topic: love, work, study, a move, a friendship.

The future here is not a sentence handed down; it is where the current line leads. If the third card worries you, look at the second one. The present is where the turn can happen.

What each position means

  1. 1

    Past

What led to the current situation — not your whole history, only the part still pulling the strings. A reversed card here often points to something unfinished: an old hurt, a task left half done, a choice you still second-guess.

  2. 2

    Present

Where you are now and what takes most of your energy. This is the anchor of the spread: it links past and future and shows what you can influence today.

  3. 3

    Future

Where the current path leads in the coming weeks or months. A Major Arcana card here signals a noticeable turn; minor cards point to gradual change in their own area — Pentacles in work and money, Cups in feelings.

Example reading

Question: “Where is my relationship with my sister heading?”

  1. PastFive of Wands
  2. PresentTwo of Cupsreversed
  3. FutureSix of Pentacles

The Five of Wands in the past shows years of small rivalries — not real hostility, just two strong people pushing for space. The Two of Cups reversed in the present says the closeness is there but out of sync: one of you reaches out while the other is busy, and both end up feeling unseen. The Six of Pentacles in the future is a card of giving and receiving in balance. It suggests the relationship moves toward something steadier, especially through practical help — showing up, sharing the load. The spread hints that the first step can be small and concrete rather than one big heart-to-heart.

Reading the three cards as one story

The key to a three-card reading is not three separate meanings but the thread between them. Notice how the mood shifts from the first card to the third — brightening, darkening or holding steady. That is the direction of the story.

Look at the suits too. If all three share a suit, the theme is obvious. Two Major Arcana in one spread mean the situation matters more than it looks. Repeated numbers, like two Threes, suggest you are at the same stage in different parts of life.

Good questions for a past, present, future spread

Questions about a process work best — something that unfolds over time. Ask about yourself or the situation, not about what another person will decide.

  • Where are things with my team heading?
  • What is the arc of my project over the next few months?
  • How is my friendship with this person developing?
  • What is going on with my wish to move cities?
  • What will this school year be like for me?

How this differs from asking the cards a question

In past, present, future the cards follow time. Ask the Cards a Question also uses three cards, but the positions are different: the heart of it, what to know, and the answer. Pick this spread when you want the story across time; pick that one when you want an answer to a specific question.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead does the future card look?

Usually a few weeks to a few months — as long as the circumstances behind the current path hold. If you want a specific window, put it in your question: what happens before the end of summer.

What if a difficult card lands in the future position?

It is a warning about where the current course leads, not an inevitability. Go back to the present card: it shows what you can change today so the future plays out differently.

Why does the past card not match what I remember?

The past card does not show events — it shows what from them still affects you. That might be a feeling or a decision you have not thought about in ages, but which is still quietly at work.

Can I use a three-card spread for love?

Yes, it is one of the most common uses. The past shows what the bond was built on, the present what is between you now, the future where it is heading. For a closer look at both people, there is a dedicated Relationship spread.

Is a three-card spread good for tarot beginners?

Yes, it is the classic place to start. The positions are intuitive, and Tayna's reading explains each card and how they connect, so you do not need to know the meanings in advance.

Are there other three-card tarot layouts?

Plenty. Any spread of three cards is sometimes called a triplet. Past, present, future is the best known, but you will also see situation, obstacle, advice, or mind, body, spirit.
