This tarot spread for studies helps when you need to choose — a university, a college, a major, a course, a master's programme — or when your studies are underway but something is not working. Am I on the right path is just as unsettling at seventeen as at thirty-five.
The first card shows your path: which way you are drawn and what kind of learning fits who you are right now. The second shows what comes easily: subjects, formats, the way of learning where you are strongest. The third gives advice — the step to start with: sending an application, talking to an adviser, going to an open day.
The cards do not know admission cut-offs or what the admissions committee will decide, and they cannot promise a scholarship or a place. They help you understand what you want from studying: a degree, knowledge, a career change, or simply time to figure yourself out. For a specific test there is a separate Exam spread.
What each position means
- 1
Your path
The direction that is closest to you right now. Wands speak of creative and active paths, Pentacles of practical professions and crafts, Swords of exact and analytical subjects, Cups of working with people. A Major Arcana card here marks a pivotal choice.
- 2
What comes easily
Your strength as a student: subjects, a format or a way of remembering things. The Three of Pentacles points to projects and group work, the Hermit to deep independent reading. Lean on this card when choosing a programme and a way to study.
- 3
Advice
A concrete step for the near future. Pages suggest trying things and asking questions, the Eight of Pentacles building a regular study habit. A reversed card asks you to clear what is in the way first: fatigue, other people's expectations, fear of choosing wrong.
Example reading
Question: “Should I study design when my parents want me to do economics?”

- AdviceTwo of Swordsreversed
The Star in Your Path speaks of a direction that inspires you and gives you hope: the pull toward design is not a whim but something that keeps you going. The Page of Cups in What Comes Easily shows imagination and a feel for images — a good foundation for a creative major, even if the craft still has to be learned. The Two of Swords reversed as advice asks you to stop putting the choice off and take the blindfold off: talk honestly with your parents, show them your work, look at the programmes and requirements together. The cards do not decide for your family, but they suggest an open conversation matters more right now than quiet agreement.
How to ask about applying and studying
Ask about your choice and your rhythm. The cards cannot read whether your scores will be enough, but they say a lot about which direction is closer to you.
- Which field is the best fit for me right now?
- What comes most easily to me as a student?
- Should I go on to a master's degree?
- How can I study while working a job?
- Why have my classes started to feel boring?
When the choice is not only yours
Choosing where to study is rarely a private decision: parents, teachers and friends all have opinions. The reading helps you separate your own voice from everyone else's. If the first card is bright and the advice points to a conversation, the path is yours — but it is worth standing up for it calmly and with good reasons.
If the first card is heavy, the choice may be coming from fear or a wish to please someone. There is no shame in that; just give yourself more time.
Studying as an adult
Courses, a second degree, retraining — the spread reads the same way. What Comes Easily is especially valuable here: adult experience often changes how you learn, and what never clicked at school can suddenly feel easy.
If you are studying to change careers, look at the Your Calling spread too — it shows where the new knowledge can take you.
Frequently asked questions
Will the reading tell me if I get into college?
It shows how much the path is yours, what to lean on and which step to take. The cards do not see admission decisions or cut-off scores, so they cannot promise you a place.
Can I use this spread to choose between two universities?
This spread looks at your direction as a whole. If you have two concrete options, compare them in the Two Options spread — it sets both paths side by side.
Does it work for online courses or a second degree?
Yes. The positions read the same for school, college, university, online courses and retraining. The cards look at how you learn, not at the kind of certificate at the end.
What should I do if I want to drop out?
Do a reading with the question what is happening to me in my studies. Sometimes the cards show the field itself is wrong; sometimes it is fatigue or one hard subject. Make any decision about switching or leaving without rushing, after talking it through with an adviser and people close to you.
Can I do a studies reading for my teenager?
It works best when they ask for themselves. If you want to understand how to support them, ask about yourself: what you can do to make things easier for them.
How is the studies spread different from the exam spread?
An exam is a single event with a date: preparation, the day itself, the outcome. Studies are a path: where to go, where your strengths lie, how to move forward. Before finals it can help to do both.
