Tarot spread for your own business
Five cards about a venture of your own: the idea, your resources, the risk, your support and where it all leads.

A business of your own starts with an idea that will not let go: a studio, a café, an online school, a service you do better than most. Then the doubts arrive — do you have the energy, is it too early, what if it fails? This business tarot spread helps you look at the whole plan, before the first investment or halfway down the road.
Five cards walk through it step by step: the idea — its core and how alive it is; resources — time, skills, energy, people; risk — the weak spot; help — what and who you can lean on; and the outcome — where things are heading with the current balance of forces. It works for a launch, for growing an existing business, and for the honest question of whether it is time to close.
The cards do not replace a business plan, the numbers or advice from an accountant or a lawyer. They will not tell you how much to invest, whether to take a loan or how to handle taxes — those are financial and legal questions for professionals. What the cards do see is what spreadsheets miss: motivation, fatigue and blind spots.
What each position means
- 1
The idea
The heart of the plan and how much life it has. An Ace of any suit is a fresh, strong seed. Wands speak of passion and inspiration, Pentacles of a practical, grounded idea, Cups of work that comes from the heart. A reversed card suggests the idea needs sharpening.
- 2
Resources
What you already have: skills, time, energy, contacts. The card also shows what is missing — the Ten of Wands points to overload, the Four of Swords to the need for rest before you launch.
- 3
Risk
The weak spot worth planning for. It can be external — the market, competition — or internal: rushing, needing to control everything, fear of putting yourself out there. A hard card here is a warning, not a ban.
- 4
Help
Where support will come from: people, experience, a community or one of your own strengths. Court cards often point to a specific person — a mentor, a partner, your first client.
- 5
Outcome
Where the business goes if things continue as they are. It is a direction, not a profit forecast. Read it together with Risk and Help — they show what you can change.
Example reading
Question: “Should I open my own ceramics studio?”
- The ideaAce of Pentacles
- ResourcesEight of Pentacles
- RiskTwo of Pentacles
- HelpThree of Cups
- OutcomeFour of Wands
The Ace of Pentacles as the idea says the plan is grounded and viable: not a dream floating in the air, but something you can hold in your hands. The Eight of Pentacles in Resources shows your main capital is already there — craft and the habit of patient, steady work. The Two of Pentacles in Risk warns about juggling: running a day job alongside a studio launch will be harder than it looks, so decide in advance what comes off your schedule. The Three of Cups in Help points to friends and community — your first students and customers will most likely come through people you know. The Four of Wands as the outcome shows a stable foundation: the studio can become a place people love coming back to. The cards do not calculate payback, but they see a living idea and real support.
How to ask about your business
A good business question is about your role and your decision. The cards cannot answer will I get rich, but they will say a lot about what you are missing for the launch.
- How viable is my business idea?
- What do I need before I launch?
- What is keeping my business from growing?
- What would a partnership with this person bring?
- How can I avoid burning out in my own venture?
When the idea is strong but you are running on empty
A common pattern: a bright card for the idea and a heavy one in Resources. It says the plan is good, but launching it while exhausted puts both the business and you at risk. That is not a no — it is a not now, or not alone.
Look at the Help position: it shows who to bring in or what to hand off. If the fatigue runs deep, start with the Inner Resources spread and come back to the business when your energy returns.
How this differs from the money spread
The Money Tarot spread looks at your finances as a whole: income, spending, your relationship with money. Here the focus is the business as a living thing — the idea, the people, the risks, the growth. Money matters, but it is only one side of it.
For a specific deal or a large purchase for the business, try the Big Purchase or Deal spread. Either way, check investment decisions against the numbers and with a professional.
Frequently asked questions
Will the reading tell me if my business will be profitable?
No. Profit depends on numbers, the market and decisions the cards cannot see. The reading shows how alive the idea is, whether you have the energy and where the weak spot is — work out profitability with an accountant.
Can I do this spread for a business that is already running?
Yes. The Idea then shows whether the original vision is still alive, Resources the state of your team and your energy, and Outcome where things are going if nothing changes.
What if The Tower lands in the Risk position?
The Tower in Risk points to a sudden change worth preparing for — say, depending on a single client, platform or person. It is not a prediction of collapse; it shows where to build a safety net.
Does this spread work for freelancers?
Yes. Freelancing is a business too, just a small one. The Resources position matters most here: it shows how much you can take on without burning out.
Can I ask about a business partner?
You can ask what the partnership would bring and where its risks lie. To understand the person themselves, try the What Kind of Person spread. Contracts and equity are still a conversation for a lawyer.
Is it better to do the reading before or after launch?
Both work. Before launch it helps test the idea and your energy; after, it shows what has changed. For a running business, once a season or before a big decision is a good rhythm.
