What do reversed Major Arcana mean?

This quiz tests how well you read the Major Arcana when they come up upside down. A reversed card keeps its theme, but its energy is delayed, turned inward or expressed too strongly. It is not a verdict or a bad omen, just a pointer to where things have stalled right now.

For some cards the reversal is actually a relief. The Devil reversed speaks of release, and The Moon upside down shows the fog starting to lift. So rather than memorizing good and bad meanings, it helps to learn the inner logic of each card.

The questions cover all 22 Major Arcana, plus a couple of general questions on working with reversals in a spread.

How do you read a reversed card in a spread?

Start from the upright meaning, then ask what is getting in its way. The Chariot reversed is the same drive with the reins slipping out of your hands. The Sun reversed is the same joy, only hidden behind a cloud of fatigue.

Next, look at the neighboring cards and at the question itself. They show whether you are dealing with a delay, with inner resistance or with an imbalance tipping one way. Tarot works here as a mirror for reflection, not as a forecast set in stone.

Plenty of readers skip reversals altogether, and that is a valid choice too. But if you do read them, knowing the shade of each card makes a spread sound more precise.

How the exam works

This is a ten-question exam drawn at random from a larger pool, with the answers shuffled every time. After each answer you see an explanation and a link to the card's page.

Tayna keys go to a run in which all ten answers are correct. You can take the quiz as many times as you like, and the review at the end lets you calmly revisit the cards that still feel tricky.

All questions and answers

Open after you play: the full question set with right answers and explanations.
  1. 1. Which arcana, reversed, speaks of scattered energy and words that don't match deeds?

    Right answer: The Magician

The reversed Magician still has every tool, but focus is scattered and words drift away from deeds and truth.

  2. 2. The reversed Fool comes up in a question about moving. What does it warn about?

Right answer: A reckless leap or endless delay

The reversed Fool shows two sides of freedom: leaping blindly, or putting the first step off forever.

  3. 3. A reversed card always means the exact opposite of the upright one.

    Right answer: Myth

A reversal doesn't mirror the meaning: the theme stays, its energy is just delayed, turned inward or overdone.

  4. 4. The reversed High Priestess turns up in a love reading. What stands in the way?

Right answer: Things left unsaid and kept secret

In a couple the reversed Priestess is a wall of things unsaid: each keeps something back, and secrets outweigh closeness.

  5. 5. Which arcana, reversed, speaks of release and breaking free of a dependence?

    Right answer: The Devil

The reversed Devil reads lighter than the upright card: the chains loosen and the right to choose comes back.

  6. 6. The reversed Emperor appears in a work reading. What gets in the way?

Right answer: Control for its own sake, or chaos

The Emperor is about structure. Reversed, it tips into extremes: rigid control that stifles, or no order at all.

  7. 7. Which arcana, reversed, speaks of fog lifting and a deception coming to light?

    Right answer: The Moon

The upright Moon is fog and vague fears, so its reversal often brings relief: what was hidden comes into view.

  8. 8. The Lovers reversed come up when you ask whether to stay. What do they show?

Right answer: Heart and values pulling apart

With The Lovers reversed, the heart pulls one way and values another, so an important choice keeps being put off.

  9. 9. A reversed Sun is a bad omen.

    Right answer: Myth

Even reversed, The Sun stays a bright card: success is close, only clouded by fatigue or expectations set too high.

  10. 10. The reversed Chariot shows up in a reading about a big project. What is going on?

Right answer: Forces pulling in different ways

The reversed Chariot is the same drive with the reins dropped. Time to stop, choose a direction and take control again.

  11. 11. Which arcana, reversed, speaks of caring for everyone except yourself?

    Right answer: The Empress

The reversed Empress gives more than she receives until her abundance runs dry. Refill your own reserves first.

  12. 12. Strength reversed appears before a difficult talk. What does it suggest?

Right answer: Regain calm instead of fighting

Reversed Strength is self-doubt or outbursts. It suggests finding steady ground within rather than battling your feelings.

  13. 13. Which arcana, reversed, speaks of drawn-out loneliness and hiding from people?

    Right answer: The Hermit

The Hermit's solitude helps while it brings answers. Reversed, it shows that the quiet has turned into isolation.

  14. 14. The Wheel of Fortune reversed comes up in a money reading. What does it advise?

Right answer: Ride it out, don't fight the current

The reversed Wheel marks a stretch when plans go sideways. Better to ride it out and notice which pattern keeps repeating.

  15. 15. Death reversed predicts a literal death.

    Right answer: Myth

In tarot Death is a change of chapters. Reversed, it shows clinging to the past, which drags the transition out.

  16. 16. The Hanged Man reversed turns up after a long wait. What does it say?

Right answer: The waiting has gone stale

The Hanged Man's pause is worth it while it shifts your view. Reversed, it goes stale: decide what you are waiting for.

  17. 17. Which arcana, reversed, speaks of imbalance and an unfair tally?

    Right answer: Justice

The scales of Justice reversed hang crooked: somewhere the tally is unfair, and it's worth naming that plainly.

  18. 18. Judgement reversed appears in a question about a second chance. What holds you back?

Right answer: Self-criticism and old grudges

Judgement calls for a second chance, but reversed it shows self-criticism and old grudges keeping you from answering.

  19. 19. Which arcana, reversed, speaks of a final step that just won't get taken?

    Right answer: The World

The reversed World stands at the finish line: nearly everything is done, yet something stops the last step.

  20. 20. The Tower reversed shows up in a career reading. What does it mean?

Right answer: Change is due but being put off

The reversed Tower is a crisis being held back. Meeting the change halfway is gentler than propping up old walls.

  21. 21. Many tarot readers don't use reversed cards at all.

    Right answer: True

Plenty of readers work with upright cards only, and that's a valid approach. Reversals simply add shades of meaning.

  22. 22. The Star reversed comes up in a question about a dream. What does it mean?

Right answer: Faith is tired, but the light remains

The reversed Star is weariness from waiting. The light of hope hasn't gone anywhere; it has simply stopped being noticed.

  23. 23. Which arcana, reversed, speaks of rebelling against rules and seeking your own path?

    Right answer: The Hierophant

The reversed Hierophant questions ready-made dogma: time to find your own answer rather than wait for approval.

  24. 24. Temperance reversed appears in a question about your daily routine. What does it show?

Right answer: Extremes and haste, no balance

Temperance blends opposites in measure. Reversed, it points to haste and lopsidedness that throw your rhythm off.
