What numbers do the court cards have?

This quiz checks how the court cards connect to numbers: their place within a suit, their kinship with the numbered cards and what several matching figures mean in one spread. There are sixteen court cards, four per suit: Page, Knight, Queen and King.

In each suit of Tayna's deck they come after the Ace and the Two to Ten. The Page is eleventh, the Knight twelfth, the Queen thirteenth and the King fourteenth. Together with the forty numbered cards, that makes the 56 Minor Arcana.

How do court cards echo the numbered cards?

The court cards are four stages of maturity within a suit. The Page learns and brings news, the Knight acts, the Queen holds the suit from within, and the King carries mastery out into the world and answers for others. Each stage has a kinship with certain numbers.

The Knight sits closest to the eights: movement, travel, events speeding up, which is why Knights so often answer questions about pace. The Queen is likened to the sixes and nines, with their harmony and near-completion. The King is nearest the fours and tens: stability and a system already built.

These links help when a court card lands among numbered cards and it is unclear whether it means a person or a situation. The neighbours show which part of the suit's journey the figure describes.

When a spread holds several of one rank

Counting matters too. Three Pages describe a setting full of beginners, three Knights a rush of tasks all at once, three Queens a circle of strong, independent people, and three Kings a situation where experienced, influential people decide.

All four of one rank are rare. Four Pages call you to learn in every area at once, four Knights push change on every front, four Queens speak of inner maturing, and four Kings of stepping up to a new level. Each run draws five random questions from twelve.

  1. 1. How many court cards are in a full tarot deck?

    Right answer: 16

Each suit has four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen and King. Four suits give sixteen cards.

  2. 2. Where does the Page come in a suit of Tayna's deck?

    Right answer: Eleventh

After the Ace and the Two to Ten come the courts: Page 11th, Knight 12th, Queen 13th, King 14th.

  3. 3. Which court rank does Tayna place closest to the eights?

    Right answer: Knight of Wands

The Knight means movement, travel and speed, like the eights. That is why Knights often answer questions about timing.

  4. 4. Which numbered cards does Tayna compare the King to?

    Right answer: Fours and tens

The King is stability and completion, a system already built. Hence his kinship with the fours and tens.

  5. 5. How many numbered cards are in the Minor Arcana without the courts?

    Right answer: 40

56 Minor Arcana minus 16 court cards leaves 40 numbered cards, Ace to Ten in every suit.

  6. 6. Which step of the court ladder does the Queen stand on?

    Right answer: The third

The Page learns, the Knight acts, the Queen knows the suit from within, and the King takes mastery out into the world.

  7. 7. All four Pages appear in one spread. How does Tayna read them?

Right answer: A strong call to learn

Four Pages are rare: life seems to enrol you in every subject at once. Mistakes here are part of the lessons.

  8. 8. Which numbered cards does Tayna liken the Queen to?

    Right answer: Sixes and nines

The Queen is harmony and near-completion, a time to enjoy the fruits, much like the sixes and nines.

  9. 9. In older decks the Page was also called a Knave or a Princess.

    Right answer: True

The names changed, but the figure always kept something young about it: the student and messenger of the suit.

  10. 10. All four Knights turn up. What do they mean for Tayna?

Right answer: Change on every front

Four Knights are a powerful push: the old order goes, and change comes to feelings, thoughts, work and money.

  11. 11. Three Kings in a work spread. What do they most often point to?

    Right answer: Senior people decide

A board, a committee, the elders: decisions sit with influential people. Find your own zone of responsibility.

  12. 12. Two Queens side by side always mean rivalry.

    Right answer: Myth

If the suits get along, like Cups and Pentacles, it means support from two sides. Rivalry fits Wands with Swords.
