What do flowers and plants mean in tarot?

This quiz checks whether you remember the flowers, wreaths, trees and fruit on the Tayna deck and understand what they mean. You will match a card to its plant, pick the right reading and take apart a couple of common misconceptions. Every detail comes from the descriptions of our own artwork.

Plants in tarot speak about growth. Where something blooms or ripens, the card is talking about life that keeps going on its own as long as it is cared for. A flower shows a feeling or an intention, a wreath shows recognition or a finished circle, a tree shows support and time, and fruit shows the result of work.

How do you read the rose, the lily and the laurel?

A rose on these cards is rarely just about romance. Red ones usually speak of desire and eager striving, white ones of a clean intention. That is why a white rose fits both the young traveller's hand and the banner of Death's rider: in each case it marks an honest, unclouded beginning.

The lily almost always stands beside roses or doves and stresses purity. Laurel is the plant of victory: a wreath on a head, on a staff or around a dancing figure says the road has been walked and recognised. The olive means peace after conflict, the palm well-earned success.

Trees and vines deserve their own look. A living branch wound with ivy means growth goes on even in a pause. Grapes and pumpkins are harvest, a feast after work. An apple tree with a serpent is knowledge and experience, while a tree of flames is living desire.
