What do mountains and roads mean on tarot cards?

This quiz checks whether you remember the mountains, hills, ledges, trails and roads on the Tayna deck and understand what they mean. You will match a card to its landscape, pick the right reading and take apart a couple of common misreadings. Every detail comes from the descriptions of our own artwork.

Mountains in tarot speak of height, solidity and time. They stand for things that take long to build or cross: understanding, experience, an order reached through work. Roads and paths show direction and pace: where the way leads, whether you can see all of it, and how to walk it.

How do you read a peak, a ledge and a path?

A peak is a place to see far from. The Hermit stands on a snowy crag because he has climbed above the bustle, and the youth on the Seven of Wands holds his hill because height gives him the advantage. Yet from every summit a path back down is visible too: climbing is not leaving forever.

A ledge or an edge marks the moment before a step. The Page of Wands stands on a ledge above a desert valley, the Fool right at the cliff's edge. Such an edge is not a threat of falling but a border between the familiar and the not-yet. Desert and sharp peaks add risk and excitement.

A path tells you about pace. A golden road ahead invites confident travel, a moonlit path asks you to walk slowly and with care, a garden trail through an arch asks you to climb step by step. A mountain with a beam of light between two people shows a shared road can lead upward.

How the quiz works

  2. 2. What does the village already in sight on the Ten of Wands' road mean?

The village is close: the road is nearly done, and the real question is what happens when the load can be set down.

  3. 3. On which card do staffs fly over a quiet valley with a lake, hills and a house on a rise?

    Right answer: Eight of Wands

Eight of Wands: the valley below is where it all will land; events speed up to become part of everyday life.

  4. 4. A road leading into the distance always means moving house.

  5. 5. What do the mountains lying below the Ace of Swords' blade mean?

The mountains below are not crossed yet, but now you can see them whole: this sword doesn't fight, it lights the road.

  6. 6. What can be seen in the distance beyond the Page of Wands?

A river winds below, sharp mountains rise far off and the sun sets at the edge of the land: unexplored ground ahead.

  7. 7. What does the hilltop give the youth on the Seven of Wands?

    Right answer: The high ground

Height is his advantage: the staffs push up at him from below while he holds the ground he has taken.

    Right answer: Knight of Pentacles

Knight of Pentacles: the ploughed land is work already done that promises a harvest if it is tended.

    Right answer: Nine of Wands

Nine of Wands: the bandage and torn trousers are marks of a long road, yet the man stands upright.
