How does tarot answer the question when?

This quiz tests how you read the cards of time and timing. The cards are happy to describe what is going on and where it is heading, but reluctant to name dates. So tarot talks about timing in two ways: through the mood of a card that speeds an event up or slows it down, and through an old convention that gives each suit its own unit of time.

The fastest card in the deck is the Eight of Wands: the event is already on its way, and an answer may arrive within days. The Chariot promises speed as well, on the condition that someone holds the reins. The Wheel of Fortune is about good timing: the moment comes when circumstances turn. The Hanged Man is the main card of slow time, and the Seven of Pentacles counts in months, not days.

Some cards name no time frame at all. The Moon says the road disappears into mist and any date now would be guesswork. The Two of Swords shows time standing still because of a decision not yet made: the event is waiting for you.

How do the suits measure time?

In the tradition Tayna follows, Wands count in days, Swords in weeks, Cups in months, and Pentacles in something longer. Some readers add the card's number: the Three of Wands is about three days, the Five of Cups about five months. A Major Arcana card in the timing position says it all hangs on a turning point rather than the calendar.

Court cards more often point to a person the event depends on than to a time frame, and Knights are traditionally the fastest of the court. Treat all this as a guide, not a promise: neither a deck nor a reader can name the exact date.

How the quiz works

Each round has five questions from twelve, with shuffled options. Tayna keys go to a round without a single mistake, and you can play as often as you like. A short explanation follows each answer, so the quiz doubles as a cheat sheet on timing.

All questions and answers

Open after you play: the full question set with right answers and explanations.
  1. 1. Which card is the fastest in the deck, with an answer possible within days?

    Right answer: Eight of Wands

Eight staffs fly across the sky with nothing to stop them. The event is already on its way: a call, a reply, a decision.

  2. 2. In the suit tradition, what unit of time do Swords count in?

    Right answer: Weeks

Wands are days, Swords weeks, Cups months, Pentacles longer. Swords cover talks, decisions and messages.

  3. 3. Which arcanum is the main card of slow time: the event isn't cancelled but must ripen?

    Right answer: The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man hangs upside down in no hurry. A pause like this rarely gives way to force.

  4. 4. Counting its number, what time frame does the Five of Cups give in the timing position?

    Right answer: About five months

Cups count in months, and the card's number is added to the suit: the Five of Cups means about five months.

  5. 5. A good timing spread can name the exact date of an event.

    Right answer: Myth

Cards give a scale, days, weeks or months, and show what shifts it. The exact date depends on people.

  6. 6. What does a Major Arcana card in the timing position mean?

Right answer: It waits for a turn

A major card says the event waits for a change, not a date: in you, in the situation or in someone else.

  7. 7. Which card says time stands still because of a decision you keep putting off?

    Right answer: Two of Swords

The blindfolded Two of Swords doesn't move. Until the choice is made, no time frame can arrive.

  8. 8. A Knight lands in the timing position. How do you read it?

Right answer: It depends on a person

Court cards point to the person the event depends on, and Knights are the fastest of the court.

  9. 9. Which card, asked when, says no time frame can be named yet?

    Right answer: The Moon

The Moon leads the road into mist: information is missing. Come back to the question once things clear up.

  10. 10. Temperance turns up next to fast cards. How does it change the pace?

Right answer: It softens the speed

Temperance moves step by step: fast cards beside it slow down, while slow ones keep moving after all.

  11. 11. The Four of Swords lands beside the Eight of Wands. What will the wait be like?

Right answer: A pause, but a short one

The Four of Swords is a lull, not a dead end. Next to the Eight of Wands the wait will be short.

  12. 12. Which card means months, not days: the result will come, in its own time?

    Right answer: Seven of Pentacles

The Seven of Pentacles is a long harvest. Patience and tending what you started matter more than haste.
