What is the compatibility arcanum?
This quiz checks how well you know the compatibility arcanum: what it is made of, which numbers are possible and how to read them. The compatibility arcanum is the number of a couple's card, worked out from two birth dates. It describes neither partner alone but what forms between them: the shared tone, the main theme and the lesson of the union.
The calculation takes three steps. For each person, add the day, month and year of birth and reduce the digits of the total to 22 or less. Then add the two personal numbers, and if the result is above 22, add its digits again. In this sum The Fool counts as 22.
Why is a couple's card always between 3 and 22?
In practice a personal birth arcanum comes out between 2 and 22, and the reduced sum of two such numbers never gives 1 or 2. So a couple's card is never The Magician or The High Priestess. Each of the twenty possible numbers has its own page on Tayna: what makes such a couple strong, where it stumbles and what is worth agreeing on.
Matching personal cards make an interesting case. If both partners share a card, the couple's card still comes out new. Two Lovers give The Hanged Man, two Justice cards give The Fool. That third force belongs to neither person alone, and it often hints at what the pair is missing.
Reading a couple's card calmly
Always read the couple's card alongside both personal cards. Yours and your partner's show what each of you brings; the union card shows what it turns into together. If the couple's card echoes one of the personal ones, that person tends to set the tone of the relationship.
No number says that two people are wrong for each other. The Tower in a couple means a bond built on truth, The Emperor a fortress, The Fool a free union that needs something to stand on. It is a reflection, not a verdict, and what grows from the meeting is up to both of you.
