What do the sky and clouds mean on tarot cards?

This quiz checks whether you remember the sky above the figures of the Tayna deck: clouds, wind, a rainbow, golden drops and constellation lines, and whether you understand what it says. You will match a card to its sky, pick the right reading and take apart a couple of common misreadings. Every detail comes from the descriptions of our own artwork.

The sky in tarot is the backdrop that sets the weather for the whole scene. It shows what is going on around a person and in their thoughts: clear or windy, a storm just passed or the sun about to break through. Often it is the sky that hints which way the card's story will turn.

How do you read clouds, wind and a rainbow?

On the Tayna deck clouds are most often tied to gifts and imagination. A hand comes out of a cloud on all four Aces: the opportunity seems to arrive by itself. The Seven of Cups' cups float on clouds, a reminder that everything seen there is still a dream. The Queen of Swords has clouds on her mantle and at her feet, thoughts she keeps in order.

Wind is a sign of speed and of the air element. When clouds race, trees bend and a cloak streams back, as with the Knight of Swords, the card speaks of a mind that has decided and will not wait. A rainbow speaks of calm: peace after rain and a fullness reached by walking the road.

Golden lines in a night sky deserve special attention. On the Eight of Swords they form constellations and remind you there are more ways out than you can see with your eyes shut. They almost always point to an exit or a connection the person cannot see yet.

How the quiz works
