What does water mean on tarot cards?
This quiz checks whether you remember the seas, rivers, pools, waterfalls and rain on the Tayna deck and understand what they say. You will match a card to its water, pick the right reading and tell a living symbol from a popular fear. Every detail comes from the descriptions of our own artwork.
Water in tarot is almost always tied to feeling. It flows, takes the shape of its vessel, reflects light and hides depth. So the water on a card shows the emotional weather: whether the heart is calm, churning, rinsed clean after a storm or simply filling up.
What kinds of water appear on the cards?
Still water, a pool, a lake or a smooth bay, speaks of calm and depth. That is the water glimmering behind the High Priestess's throne: knowledge in no hurry to show itself. The quiet sea on the Six and the Ten of Swords shows that the hardest part is over.
Rough water, waves, foam and storm, is not automatically trouble. The King of Cups sits in the middle of a stormy sea and stays calm: he does not deny feelings, he knows how to be with them. The waves behind the Two of Pentacles simply remind you that everything around is rocking, and that is fine.
Moving and pouring water, streams, brooks, waterfalls, water passed from cup to cup, speaks of motion and exchange. Where it spills over the brim, the feeling is bigger than its vessel. Where it is poured into a pool and onto the earth, strength returns to the one who gives. And rain can wash away what is no longer needed.
