What the card shows
On our card, a young charioteer in golden armor and a blue star-strewn cloak stands in his chariot beneath a starry canopy. He wears a crown set with a star and holds a spear-like scepter ringed with glowing hoops of light. Two sphinxes in striped royal headdresses, one black and one white, draw the chariot, while castles crown the cliffs on either side and waterfalls pour down between them.
The sphinxes face different ways: opposing forces such as reason and feeling, fear and desire, which must be held together. Instead of reins, thin threads of blue light run from his hands to them, because the steering comes from within, through will and attention. The castles fall behind, a golden road glows ahead, and the stars overhead recall the higher aim of the journey.
Upright meaning
The Chariot upright means forward motion, victory and the ability to hold your course despite inner contradictions. It is card seven: having made a choice with The Lovers, the hero climbs into the chariot and drives.
The card is about discipline and focus. Doubts and mixed desires do not vanish, but you can learn to steer them in one direction. It is a time to act decisively, travel and go after what you want, calmly yet persistently.
Reversed meaning
The Chariot reversed points to a lost sense of direction: the sphinxes pull apart and progress turns into running in circles. There may be rushing, plans falling through, or the feeling that life is driving you rather than the other way around.
The card suggests stopping and choosing a single goal. Sometimes slowing down is what keeps you from skidding off at the next bend. Control returns not through force but through clarity about where exactly you are going.
The Chariot in love and relationships
Upright
In love, The Chariot is about momentum: the relationship moves forward, reaches a new stage, and trips or a move together may be on the cards. If you are single, it is a card of active searching; meetings happen while you are on the move rather than waiting at home. In a couple, what matters is that both of you pull the same way, like the sphinxes under one hand. If your directions differ, the card asks you to agree on a route.
Reversed
The Chariot reversed in a relationship is two people pulling in opposite directions. One rushes, the other brakes, and instead of moving forward you argue about who is in charge. Sometimes things are speeding along too fast, and stopping to ask where this is going feels frightening. The card suggests easing off the pace and choosing a direction together.
The Chariot as feelings
When The Chariot describes someone's feelings for you, they are determined and want to move things forward. You are a goal to them, and they are ready to act, not just think about it. There can be a thrill of the chase in it, so pay attention to where they want to go with you.
The Chariot in work and career
At work, The Chariot is the card of victory, promotion and drive. It is a good time for ambitious goals, competitions, relocation or business travel. Results depend on focus rather than on how many things you juggle: pick the main one and carry it across the finish line.
The Chariot in money
With money, The Chariot speaks of growth through active effort: income comes when you push things forward yourself. Expect spending on travel, transport or a move. Keep a firm hand on the budget so speed does not turn into overspending.
The Chariot as the card of the day
As a card of the day, The Chariot means a lot gets done on the move. Set one goal and do not get pulled into small arguments along the way. Good for trips, meetings and decisions that have been waiting for a steady hand.
The card's advice
Choose one goal and point all your strength at it. Do not wait for the contradictions to disappear; learn to lead them with you.
