What are the astrological houses, and how do they meet tarot?

This quiz tests how the twelve houses of the horoscope work in tarot. A house is an area of life: money, communication, family, love, work, partnership and so on. The signs divide the sky along the Sun's path, while the houses divide it by the Earth's daily turn as seen from your birthplace. That is why a personal chart with houses needs your birth time and place, while birth date tarot only needs the day, month and year.

Tarot has an astrological spread: twelve cards laid in a circle, each standing for one house. The result is a portrait of every area of life at once. It resembles the yearly reading, which also has twelve places, but there they are months and here they are themes. Knowing the houses helps even without the spread: it is a handy cheat sheet for which part of life a card is talking about.

Which house covers which part of life?

The first house is your self and how others see you. The second is money and values. The third is communication, study and short trips. The fourth is home, family and roots. The fifth is creativity, romance, children and joy. The sixth is daily work, routine and health. The seventh is partnership and marriage. The eighth is shared resources, crises and deep change. The ninth is long journeys, learning and worldview. The tenth is career and calling. The eleventh is friends and hopes. The twelfth is what is hidden, solitude and inner life.

Modern astrology often pairs the houses with the signs in order: the first house with Aries, the second with Taurus and so on to the twelfth house and Pisces. This is called the natural zodiac. It makes the meanings easy to recall: Libra, the sign of union, matches the seventh house of partnership.

How the quiz works

Each round draws five of twelve questions: house meanings, scenarios with a card landing in a house, and true-or-myth claims. Tayna keys go to a flawless round, with unlimited replays. A card in a house describes the mood of that area and what to notice; it does not promise an event.

All questions and answers

Open after you play: the full question set with right answers and explanations.
  1. 1. Which area of life does the seventh house describe in astrology?

    Right answer: Partnership and marriage

The seventh house is about unions: marriage, business partners and anyone we meet face to face.

  2. 2. The Eight of Pentacles lands in the tenth house of an astrological spread. What is it about?

Right answer: Steady work on a career

The tenth house is career and calling, and the Eight of Pentacles is craft and diligence: growth through skill.

  3. 3. How many positions does the astrological tarot spread by houses have?

    Right answer: Twelve

Twelve cards in a circle, one for each house. Some readers add one more in the centre for the overall theme.

  4. 4. What do you need to know to build the houses of a personal chart?

Right answer: Birth time and place

Houses depend on the Earth's turn, so the hour and place matter. Birth date tarot works without them.

  5. 5. Which card is closest in meaning to the second house of money and values?

    Right answer: Four of Pentacles

The Four of Pentacles is saving and stability, the way we hold resources. That is the second house's theme.

  6. 6. Houses and zodiac signs are the same thing under different names.

    Right answer: Myth

Signs divide the sky along the Sun's path, houses by the Earth's turn over a birthplace. They are separate wheels.

  7. 7. What does the twelfth house describe in astrology?

Right answer: Hidden things and solitude

The twelfth house is inner life, secrets and whatever happens away from other people's eyes.

  8. 8. Which sign matches the seventh house in the natural zodiac?

    Right answer: Libra

Houses follow the signs in order from Aries, so the seventh is Libra, the sign of union and balance.

  9. 9. The Two of Cups turns up in the fifth house. Which area is it speaking about?

    Right answer: Romance and love

The fifth house is romance, joy and creativity. The Two of Cups there speaks of mutual attraction.

  10. 10. How does the astrological spread differ from a yearly reading?

Right answer: Places are areas, not months

Both have twelve places, but in the yearly reading they are months and in the astrological one, houses.

  11. 11. Which card in the third house, the house of communication, points to quick news?

    Right answer: Eight of Wands

The Eight of Wands is speed and news. In the house of communication it means messages, calls and fast replies.

  12. 12. An empty house in a birth chart means nothing will happen in that area.

    Right answer: Myth

An empty house still has meaning: the ruler of its sign speaks for it. The area is simply not in the spotlight.
