How do you read someone's thoughts in tarot?

This quiz checks how accurately you read the 'what are they thinking' position. You will choose the card that best describes the way someone's mind is working, apply cards to relationship readings and test a couple of common misconceptions. There are no questions about numbers or artwork here, only about what each card means in this position.

Thoughts in tarot are not feelings; they show how a person lays the situation out in their head: making plans, doubting, arguing, remembering or drawing a line. Head and heart often disagree. The Two of Swords hides its feelings behind a shield while its mind weighs every pro and con. That is why the thoughts position deserves its own reading.

What to look for in the thoughts position

Start with direction. Some cards look ahead: the Knight of Swords has made up his mind and holds a plan, the Eight of Wands keeps coming back to the urge to message you. Some hold a pause: the Seven of Pentacles weighs where things are heading, The Hermit reflects alone and is in no hurry to conclude. Others are stuck in the past or in a quarrel, like the Five of Swords rehearsing its arguments.

Clarity matters too. The Seven of Cups has a swarm of options in mind, The High Priestess watches from a distance, the Nine of Swords worries at night about what could go wrong. Anxious thoughts are not the same as a bad opinion of you; often they are just fear of losing something precious.
