What is a birthday number?

This quiz checks how the birthday number is worked out and how to link it to the tarot. In numerology the birthday number is the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. Born on the 25th? Then 2 + 5 = 7. Unlike the full date, the month and year play no part here.

Two-digit days are reduced by adding their digits. The 29th gives 11, then 2. Some schools keep 11 and 22 as master numbers while others reduce everything to one digit, so books show both versions.

How do you link the number to an arcanum?

Digits one to nine are easy to read through the Major Arcana with the same numbers: 1 is The Magician, 2 The High Priestess and so on up to 9, The Hermit. That turns the number into an image you can think with: The Chariot for seven speaks of will and momentum, The Emperor for four of order and support.

Do not mix this up with Tayna's own calculations. Personality and soul cards come from the full birth date, and the year card adds your day and month to the current year. The birthday number is a separate, simpler key, best compared with Tayna's cards as a different method.

Every number like this is shared by everyone born on the same day, so it describes a tendency and a theme, never the events of a life.

Your birthday as a personal New Year

Tayna calls your birthday a personal New Year. There is a three-card spread for it: what leaves with the year behind you, what arrives, and the lesson the new year of life brings. The third card is the main theme life will keep bringing you back to until the next birthday.

You can use both tools together: work out your birthday number, then on the day itself lay the spread and see how the drawn cards answer that digit. Each run of this quiz takes three random questions from eight, and the explanation appears right after each answer.

  1. 1. What does numerology call the birthday number?

Right answer: Your birth day reduced to a digit

It uses only the day of the month you were born, reduced to one digit: the 25th gives 2 + 5 = 7.

  2. 2. Born on the 29th. What is the birthday number reduced to one digit?

    Right answer: 2

    2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Some schools keep 11 as a master number, but reduced to one digit it is 2.

  3. 3. Born on the 16th. Which arcanum matches the reduced birthday number?

    Right answer: The Chariot

1 + 6 = 7, and card seven is The Chariot. Left unreduced, 16 would point to The Tower.

  4. 4. Your birthday number can tell the specific events of your life.

    Right answer: Myth

Everyone born on that day shares the number. It describes a tendency and a theme, not events.

  5. 5. What does Tayna call your birthday in the birthday spread?

Right answer: Your personal New Year

A birthday is your own turning point: one year of life ends and the next one begins.

  6. 6. How many cards are in Tayna's birthday spread?

    Right answer: Three

Three cards: what leaves with the year behind you, what arrives, and the lesson of the new year of life.

  7. 7. For people born on the 31st, the birthday number is…

    Right answer: 4, The Emperor

3 + 1 = 4, and card four is The Emperor: structure and support. 31 is above 22, so it gets reduced.

  8. 8. Which position in the birthday spread is the main theme of the year?

Right answer: Lesson of the new year

The third card is the lesson life will keep repeating until your next birthday: the main theme of the year.
