Birth date tarot: personality, soul and year cards

Three calculators that work your cards out from a date instead of drawing them. See which one fits your question.

Tarot by birth date

Birth date tarot is Tayna's set of three calculators that find your cards from a date rather than drawing them at random: your Personality and Soul cards, compatibility with another person, and the card of your personal year. It is for anyone who wants to look at themselves or a relationship through the Major Arcana without putting a question to the deck.

All three work the same way: the digits of a date are added together and reduced to a number from 1 to 22 — one of the 22 Major Arcana, with 22 standing for The Fool. Only the inputs differ. Your birth card uses your day, month and year of birth. Compatibility uses two dates and their combined sum. The year card uses your birth day and month plus the current year.

A birth date card describes tendencies and themes, not events or fate. There is nothing to fear in it and no verdict to accept: it is a prompt to see yourself from a new angle. Below you will find how the calculators differ, which one suits your question, and how to read the arcana that come up most often.

Cards that matter here

  • What you get when the digits add up to 22. As a Personality card The Fool marks someone of light starts and bold turns; their Soul card is always The Emperor, a pairing in which freedom looks for solid ground.

  • Card number 1 and a frequent Soul card. It speaks of a need to make ideas real with your own hands — for this person, words count only once they turn into action.

  • Card three: care, creativity, growing things. As a year card The Empress promises not events but a season in which it is easier to invest in what grows slowly.

  • Card eleven as a Personality card gives The High Priestess as the Soul card (1 + 1 = 2). Calm endurance on the outside, trust in your own intuition within.

  • Card nine is the highest possible Soul card, because reducing to a single digit always gives 1 to 9. It is a need for quiet and for your own answer, even in a crowd.

  • Card ten. As a year card it speaks of turns and movement; as a Personality card, of someone who steps into change easily. Its Soul card is The Magician.

  • Card seventeen: hope and renewal. As a couple card The Star describes a bond that helps both people believe in themselves and keep their bearings.

How a birth date calculation differs from a card draw

A spread drawn from the deck answers a specific question at a specific moment: the server shuffles all 78 cards and every draw is a new combination. A birth date calculation works differently. There is no chance involved: the same date always gives the same cards, and you can check them on paper in a couple of minutes.

That is why the calculators answer different questions. Not what will happen in this situation, but which themes stay with me for life, or what is this year about. Only the Major Arcana are used, because reducing the digits gives exactly 22 possible results, and the Minor Arcana, with their everyday scenes, are too small for a portrait of a person.

The two approaches combine well. Find your Personality and Soul cards first, then do an ordinary reading with them in mind. If your own birth card turns up in a draw, give it extra attention: a theme you always carry is sounding louder than usual.

In what order to look at your cards

Start with your Personality and Soul cards: they never change and form the base for everything else. Read both descriptions and note where you recognise yourself and where you do not. A mismatch is useful too — we often miss in ourselves what seems obvious to others.

Next, work out your year card. It shows which theme comes to the front this season, and it is worth comparing with your Personality card. If they match, the year amplifies your familiar traits. If they differ, the year asks you to try something that does not usually come naturally.

Compatibility makes sense last, once you know your own cards: it is then easier to see what in the couple comes from you and what from the other person.

  • Personality and Soul cards — who you are by birth date.
  • Year card — what the season until your next birthday is about.
  • Compatibility — what grows between you and another person.
  • Birthday spread — live cards from the deck for your personal new year.

If your birth date card feels heavy

The Tower, The Devil, The Moon or The Hanged Man as a Personality or year card can sound alarming, but in a birth date calculation they read as a task, not a threat. The Tower as a year card marks a season when it is easier to let go of what is outdated than to hold on to it. The Devil as a Personality card speaks of strong attachment — to people, work, pleasures — that is worth noticing, not of a vice.

The Moon describes a vivid imagination and intuition that need an anchor in reality. The Hanged Man is the gift of seeing things differently and of pausing while everyone else rushes. Every Major Arcana card has a bright side and a shadow side, and your birth date does not decide which one shows up.

If you dislike your card, read its full meaning on the card's own page, then ask yourself where that theme already lives in your life. The answer usually comes sooner than you expect, and it is gentler than the name.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my birth time and place for birth date tarot?

No. Only the day, month and year are used. Birth time and place matter for an astrological natal chart; birth date tarot works with the digits of the date and the Major Arcana.

How is birth date tarot different from numerology?

The method is similar: the digits of the date are added and reduced. The difference is in the reading. Numerology interprets the number itself; here the number becomes a Major Arcana card, and the meaning unfolds through its image and story.

Can my Soul card be The Sun or The World?

No. The Soul card is the number reduced to one digit, so it is always one of the first nine cards, from The Magician to The Hermit. The Sun, The World and the other higher numbers can appear as a Personality card or a year card.

Which calculator should I use to understand a relationship?

Tarot compatibility: it works out a card for each of you and one for the couple. If you still have questions about what is happening between you right now, move on to the relationship spread in the love section, which draws cards from the deck.

Can I work out my child's birth card?

Yes, the calculation works for any date. Treat the result as a description of tendencies rather than a plan: children grow and choose for themselves, and the card can simply help you notice their strengths.

How often should I revisit birth date calculations?

Your Personality and Soul cards need working out only once — they never change. Check your year card on your birthday, when a new personal year begins. Compatibility is worth revisiting whenever you want a fresh look at an important relationship.

What should I do with my birth card next?

Open that card's page and read its upright and reversed meanings. Then spend a week noticing where its theme turns up in ordinary days. If you want an answer to a specific question, do a reading from the deck with your card in mind.
