Tarot questions about love and relationships

What to ask about them, about the two of you, about an ex or someone new — so the cards bring clarity instead of more worry.

Love questions are the ones people bring to tarot most often, and the ones that are hardest to ask well. When your heart is involved, you want to ask straight out: “Do they love me?” “Will we end up together?” Yet those questions tend to bring a fresh wave of anxiety rather than clarity. The cards go deeper when a question opens a situation up instead of demanding a verdict.

This guide is only about relationships. It covers questions about the person you care about, about you as a couple, about an ex, and about someone you have only just met. Each part comes with example wording and a note on which spread holds those questions best. The examples say “he” or “they”, but every one of them works for any partner.

If you want the general rules for wording a tarot question, start with our guide on what to ask tarot. This page is the next step: how to talk to the cards about closeness, trust and feelings while keeping yourself — the person asking — at the center.

The core idea: ask about the bond, not just the person

A relationship is always two people and the space between them. “What is he thinking?” looks in only one direction. “What does he think about me and about us?” brings in the connection, so the cards can show not only his thoughts but how they touch your life.

The second idea is to leave yourself a move. Tarot cannot steer someone else's feelings, but it is good at showing what you can do: speak up, wait, ask, let go. If your question leaves no room for your own action, add it. “Will he come back?” becomes “What do I need to understand while I wait?”

The third is honesty. It is tempting to phrase a question so it produces the answer you want. The cards usually catch that: the Moon turns up, or reversed Cups, and the reading talks about self-deception. Better to ask about what actually hurts from the start.

Tarot questions about him: thoughts and feelings

Questions about a man you like are the most common of all. They sit well in the What Do They Think of Me, How Do They Feel About Me and Tarot Reading About Him spreads. To get something useful, ask about how he relates to you and what matters to him, rather than about every single thing he did.

  • How does he feel about me right now?
  • How does he see me — what does he value, what does he miss?
  • What is he not saying to me?
  • What does he expect from this relationship?
  • What keeps him from showing his feelings?
  • How does he feel about what is happening between us?
  • What matters most to him in his life right now?
  • How can I best talk to him about what is bothering me?

Questions about your relationship and its future

Once you are together, the questions shift from “do they love me” to “how do we do this”. Spreads built for two work well here — the Relationship Reading and the Lovers' Pyramid. Each of you gets a position, and a separate card shows what lives between you.

If something feels off and doubts have crept in, do not turn a reading into a way of checking up on your partner. That is a question for a conversation, not for tarot. What the cards can do is help you prepare for that talk: where the worry comes from, what is really going on, and how to begin. The Trust in a Relationship spread is made for exactly this.

  • What is really happening between us right now?
  • What strengthens our relationship, and what wears it down?
  • What is each of us missing?
  • Where is this relationship heading if nothing changes?
  • What would help us feel close again?
  • Where does my anxiety in this relationship come from?
  • How can I start a hard conversation so it brings us closer?
  • What do we need to decide together in the coming months?

Tarot questions about an ex

Questions about an ex come up more often than people admit. The past does not let go until you understand what it was. The most common trap is asking “Will they come back?” every day. The cards answer that one vaguely, because the other person has their own will. It is more useful to ask what is still between you and what you need.

For these questions there is the five-card Ex Tarot Reading: why it ended, what they feel, what they think about you, whether there is a way back, and advice. If the pain is still fresh, start with the After a Breakup spread instead — it is about you, not them.

  • Why did our relationship really end?
  • How does my ex feel about me now that time has passed?
  • Do they think back on us, and in what light?
  • Is another try worth it — and what would have to change?
  • What do I need to understand to let go?
  • What did this relationship teach me?
  • What is stopping me from opening up to someone new?

Questions about someone new

The start of something is when you want to know everything at once. Tarot is useful here as a way to slow down: to look at the person, at your own expectations, and at what draws you to each other. Try What Is This Person Like, What Do They Want From Me, or Will We Meet.

If there is no one yet, turn the questions toward yourself: what you are looking for, where you are ready to open up, what stands in the way. The Your Future Partner spread is built around exactly that.

  • What is this person like — on the surface and underneath?
  • What do they want from getting to know me?
  • Is there something here beyond a passing attraction?
  • What can I expect from our next date?
  • Which of my expectations about them should I check?
  • What kind of person would I truly be happy with?
  • What would bring me closer to meeting them?

Love questions to avoid

Some questions only make things worse. They are not forbidden — the cards simply cannot give the kind of answer you are hoping for, so the reading turns into a new source of worry. Here is what to rephrase.

  • Control questions: “Where is he right now?” “Who is he texting?” Tarot does not track people. Ask what you need in order to feel calm instead.
  • Suspicion questions. If trust is shaky, ask about trust: “What is it about this relationship that really unsettles me?”
  • Questions that demand a guarantee: “Will he definitely propose?” No one can promise anything on another person's behalf. Try “What would strengthen our bond?”
  • Questions about making someone feel something. The cards do not override another person's will. Ask how you can be more honest about your own feelings.
  • The same question over and over. A repeat reading answers your fear, not your question. Wait until something in the situation actually changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask about the feelings of someone I barely know?

Yes. The cards will show what is happening in this new connection and what to expect from it. But the less there is between you, the more the reading will speak about your own hopes and what draws you to them — which is worth knowing too.

Is it better to ask “do they love me” or “how do they feel”?

The second. “Do they love me” is a closed question, and a single card can only give a short answer. “How do they feel about me” opens up the shades — tenderness, doubt, fear of showing it — and those tell you far more about what to do next.

Do these questions work for same-sex relationships?

Yes. Every example works for any couple. The cards read the connection between people, not gender, so swap “he” for “she”, “they” or a name.

Can I ask a love question on behalf of a friend?

It is better if your friend asks for themselves: the question will be sharper and the answer will be theirs. If you want to help, ask about your part: “How can I support my friend through this?”

Should I include the person's name in my question?

You do not have to. It is enough that you know who you mean. A name or a short description like “a coworker I have grown close to” helps Tayna tie the reading to your story.

What if a love reading leaves me upset?

Do not rush to ask again. Go back to the advice position: even a difficult card almost always suggests something you can do. A reading shows how things stand today, and relationships change as people do.

Ready to ask the cards?

You can skip the question — the cards will answer with what matters now.
