Three cards for a mom, a dad or any adult raising a child: what they feel, what they need from you, and how to grow closer.

- How to grow closer
Sometimes a child suddenly closes the door, literally and otherwise: one-word answers, long hours in their room, irritation at every question. Or the opposite — a toddler who needs you every single minute, and you cannot tell what is missing. A tarot reading on your relationship with your child helps you step back and see what is going on between you.
Three cards show what your child may be feeling in your relationship, what they need from you in particular, and how you can grow closer. It works for a son or a daughter, a little one, a teenager or a grown adult — and for stepparents, grandparents and anyone else who is raising a child.
This is a reading about your relationship, not about your child's destiny. The cards do not predict their future and they do not diagnose anything; they suggest how you can show up. If you are seriously worried about your child, the best next step is talking to a child psychologist.
What each position means
- 1
What the child feels
Their mood within your relationship: trust, hurt, tiredness, a wish for freedom or a need for warmth. It is not mind reading, just a pointer to what deserves your attention. Pages often speak of a child's openness and curiosity; Swords of tension they do not yet have words for.
- 2
What they need from you
What your child is missing from you specifically: attention, space, clear rules, praise, calm. Cups ask for warmth, Wands for joining in their interests, Pentacles for steadiness and a predictable routine.
- 3
How to grow closer
A concrete step for you: a conversation, a shared activity, a different tone, or simply time together. The card speaks to what the adult can do; it does not promise how your child will respond.
Example reading
Question: “How can I reconnect with my teenage daughter, who barely says a word to me?”
- What the child feelsFour of Swordsreversed
- What they need from youThe Hermit
- How to grow closerThree of Pentacles
The Four of Swords reversed in her feelings says the silence is not rebellion but exhaustion: she needs to recharge, and the pause has dragged on longer than she would like herself. The Hermit in what she needs from you asks you to respect her closed door and her right to be alone — no interrogations, no taking it personally. The Three of Pentacles as the way closer suggests doing something together: cooking dinner, putting up a shelf, helping with her project. With teenagers, closeness is often built shoulder to shoulder rather than face to face. The cards advise asking less and simply being around more.
What to ask about your child
Ask about your bond and your own part in it — that is where the reading gives you something to stand on. Questions about your child's future, grades or career are not what this spread is for: that path is theirs.
- What is going on between me and my son right now?
- What is my daughter missing in our relationship?
- How can I talk to my teenager so they actually hear me?
- How can I snap at my child less often?
- How can I support my child after we moved to a new city?
When the card for your child's feelings is a heavy one
Swords, the Moon or the Tower in the first position do not mean something is wrong with your child or that you are a bad parent. More often the card points to pressure your child is carrying — at school, with friends or at home — and cannot explain yet. Look at the other two cards: they show what you can offer right now.
If the worry has not let go for weeks and your child is clearly struggling, talk to a child psychologist. The cards help you notice; a specialist helps you act.
When your child is already grown
The spread works just as well when your son or daughter is twenty-five or forty. With adult children, the What they need from you card usually speaks less about care and more about trusting their choices and their right to live their own way. To see the same bond from the other side, your grown child can do their own Relationship with parents reading.
Frequently asked questions
Is it fair to do a reading about my child without telling them?
The reading is about your relationship with your child and has no effect on them. It does not uncover their secrets and does not replace talking. It works best as preparation for a real conversation — where to start and what tone to take.
Will the cards show my child's future?
No. This spread looks at your bond right now and at what you can do. Your child's future is their own path, and the cards will not decide it for them.
Does the spread work for a toddler or a baby?
Yes. With little ones, the cards tend to speak about simple things: daily rhythm, attention, a calm adult nearby. If a toddler is fussy, the card for what they need often points to your own exhaustion rather than their temperament.
Can I do one reading for all my kids?
It is better to do one per child. Each child has their own relationship with you, and a shared reading blurs their stories together. If your question is how your children get along with each other, frame it as a question about the family.
Why do the cards seem to describe me more than my child?
It happens a lot: the Moon or the Nine of Swords in your child's feelings sometimes reflects the parent's own anxiety. A relationship always involves two people, and often the adult is the one who shifts first. It is not a reproach, just a hint about where to begin.
Can a tarot reading replace seeing a child psychologist?
No. The cards can help you see the relationship in a new light and find the right words, but they do not assess your child or diagnose anything. If something truly worries you, reach out to a child psychologist or the school counselor.
