Inner resource: a tarot spread for your energy

Three cards for low-energy days: what drains you, what fills you up, and where to start today.

The cards are shuffling…

Tap to skip straight to choosing

  1. What drains you
  2. What fills you
  3. A step for today

There are stretches when even pleasant things feel heavy. Mornings start tired, weekends do not restore you, and the to-do list grows faster than your energy. An inner resource tarot spread helps you see where your energy is leaking out and where it can come back from.

Three cards answer three plain questions. What is draining you right now — people, circumstances, thoughts, habits. What fills you up — the things that bring back strength and joy, even if you have not touched them in a while. And what step you can take today: not a monthly plan, just one small action you have the energy for right now.

The spread does not replace rest, sleep or looking after yourself, and it does not explain why you have been exhausted for a long time. If your energy has been gone for weeks, talk to a professional. The cards help with something else: noticing where you are not taking care of yourself, and gently changing it.

What each position means

  1. 1

    What drains you

Your biggest energy leak today. The Ten of Wands means too much on your plate, Swords point to anxious thoughts and inner arguments, Cups to emotional giving with nothing coming back. A reversed card hints at a hidden leak — hard to see because it has become routine.

  2. 2

    What fills you

A source worth returning to: an activity, people, a place, a state of mind. Pentacles often speak of the body, nature and simple pleasures, Cups of loved ones, Wands of creativity and movement.

  3. 3

    A step for today

One concrete thing you can do today. Not a big change but a first shift — translate the card into the smallest action your energy allows.

Example reading

Question: “Where do I find energy when there is nothing left by the evening?”

  1. What drains youTen of Wands
  2. What fills youThree of Cups
  3. A step for todayFour of Swords

The Ten of Wands in what drains you names the cause plainly: too much weight on one pair of shoulders, and some of it is not even yours. The Three of Cups in what fills you points to a source you have not gone back to in a while — people you can laugh with easily, without having to be the strong one. The Four of Swords as a step for today asks not for a new task but for a real pause: twenty minutes of quiet with no screen and no to-do list. The cards are not asking you to rebuild everything at once. Rest first, then time with friends, and only after that a conversation about which load it is time to hand back.

Turning a card into a step

The third position only works if the answer becomes an action. Ask yourself what the card means at the scale of a single day. The Sun — get outside into daylight for at least half an hour. The Eight of Pentacles — do one task carefully and all the way through, without rushing. The Page of Cups — message someone you think of warmly.

If the step still feels too big, cut it in half again. Energy comes back through small things done today, not through big plans for next Monday.

Questions for an energy reading

You can skip the question entirely and let the cards read your overall state. If there is a specific situation, though, name it — the answer will be sharper.

  • What is taking the most energy from me right now?
  • What will help me recover after a hard month?
  • Where is my source of strength in this relationship?
  • Why does rest no longer restore me?
  • What can I do for myself today?

Inner resource and the rest of the section

This spread is a good place to start when other topics feel too heavy to lift. Shadow work or searching for your purpose take energy, and it is more honest to refill first. Once your strength returns, you can look at yourself more broadly with Who Am I Now or Strengths and Weaknesses.

Frequently asked questions

How is an inner resource reading different from Advice from the Cards?

Advice from the Cards answers any question with a single hint. The inner resource spread looks specifically at your energy: where it leaks, where it refills and what to do today. It is a sharper tool for a tired stretch.

What if a heavy card lands in the what-fills-you position?

Sometimes the resource hides in an unexpected place. The Hermit here says solitude, not company, will restore you. A reversed Nine of Swords says relief will come once you put an anxious thought into words. Look in the card for a hint, not for decoration.

Can I do an energy tarot reading every day?

For a daily check-in the Card of the Day works better. This spread is more useful once a week or at the start of a hard period, so you have time to take the step and notice what it changed.

Can this spread help with burnout?

It can help you see where your energy goes and find a first foothold. But burnout is serious, and cards alone are not enough: you need rest, support from people close to you and sometimes help from a professional.

What if today's step feels impossible?

Then make it smaller. If the card calls for a conversation, start with one message. If it calls for movement, start with a five-minute walk. What matters is not doing a lot but getting unstuck.
