Thoughts, feelings, actions is one of the best-known three-card tarot spreads, and a natural place to start when someone confuses you. They text sweetly, then vanish for a week. They say little, yet keep showing up. This spread puts their head, their heart and their behaviour side by side, so you can see where the three line up and where they pull apart.
The first card shows what they think about you and the connection. The second shows what they feel. The third shows how they are likely to act in the near future. The positions are not tied to gender: the spread reads the same whether you ask about him, her, or anyone who matters to you.
Tayna also has separate spreads for what someone thinks of you and how they feel about you; those go deeper into one side. This one gives you the full picture in a single draw, and it is most useful when someone's thoughts, feelings and actions do not seem to agree. It does not make choices for you. It shows what is going on, and what you do with that is up to you.
What each position means
- 1
Thoughts
How they think about you and the relationship: judgements, doubts, plans. Swords suggest a lot of overthinking, Wands show ideas eager to become action, Pentacles show a practical, measured view.
- 2
Feelings
What lives in their heart, even if they keep it quiet. Cups and bright Major Arcana point to warmth and attachment; a reversed card often means a feeling they are holding back or have not admitted to themselves.
- 3
Actions
What they are likely to do — or not do — soon. Read it as the most probable course, not a promise: the Chariot or a Knight leans toward a move, while Fours and the Hanged Man point to a pause.

Question: “What does he think, feel and plan to do after our argument?”
- ThoughtsTwo of Swords
- FeelingsQueen of Cups
- ActionsKnight of Pentaclesreversed
The Two of Swords in thoughts shows him stuck between two choices: admit he was wrong or hold his ground. For now he is avoiding the question rather than answering it. The Queen of Cups in feelings says the warmth has not gone anywhere: he cares, he misses you, and he wants peace. The Knight of Pentacles reversed in actions means he will be slow to move — a step toward you is possible, but it will be quiet and not immediate. His heart is ahead of his head here, and his head is holding back his hands, so silence from him right now is not the same as indifference.
When head, heart and actions disagree
The real insight of this spread lies in the gaps between the cards. Warm feelings with a heavy action card mean they are drawn to you but something is stopping them — fear, circumstances, self-doubt. Kind thoughts with a cool feelings card mean they respect you, but their heart has not caught up.
When all three cards share a suit or a mood, the picture is consistent: they think, feel and act in the same direction. When the cards argue, look at the actions card. It tends to show which side will win out in the near term.
Questions that suit this spread
Anchor your question to a moment — after a conversation, before a date, in the middle of a silence. That way the cards read what matters now rather than the whole history.
- What does he think, feel and plan after our date?
- Why does she say one thing and do another?
- How do they really see me, and what should I expect?
- What is going on inside them while they stay quiet?
- What are my partner's thoughts and feelings about us lately?
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a spread about how he feels?
A feelings spread looks only at the heart: the feeling itself, how deep it goes, and what keeps it hidden. Thoughts, feelings, actions covers three sides at once and shows how they connect. Choose it for the overall picture; choose the single-topic spreads when you want depth in one area.
Does the actions card show exactly what they will do?
No. It shows the most likely direction if things continue as they are. People have free will and circumstances shift. Treat the card as a hint about what to prepare for, not a schedule.
What does a reversed card in the actions position mean?
Most often delay or hesitation: a move is possible, but they keep postponing it. Sometimes it is an action done quietly, without announcement. The two cards before it usually explain what is holding them back.
Can I use this spread for a friend rather than a partner?
Yes. Every relationship has thoughts, feelings and actions in it — friendships, work ties, family. Just say in your question who the person is to you, and Tayna will read the cards in that light.
Why only three cards?
Three positions are exactly enough to see the head, the heart and the behaviour without drowning in detail. If you need a wider story, the person and relationship spreads use more cards.
Can I ask what both of us think, feel and do?
Draw the spread twice: once about them, once about yourself. Comparing the two rows often shows where you are out of step — for example, you both feel the same but neither of you is acting.
